FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) -- Sheriff's deputies say 51-year-old Anthony Charles Williams was found shot to death in the backyard of his mobile home in the 3,600 block of Pickerel Street, south of Fayetteville Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbor Ulysses Womack told ABC11 he heard a woman calling for help as he unloaded groceries from his car.

"The lady across the street yelled at me 'Someone call 911!' She said 'I believe he is dead,'" said Womack.

Deputies said Williams was found partially underneath the mobile home.

"When we arrived, we found a subject with a gunshot wound," said sheriff's department spokesperson Sean Swain. "He was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and pronounced dead."

Womack said he said he tried to keep Williams alive till paramedics arrived.

"I reached in and started doing chest compressions. Then I asked him 'Sir, can you hear me?' He opened his mouth real wide, opened his eyes, [and] then I thought maybe he is breathing. I said 'Thank you Lord. I got him. I got him.' But when he closed his mouth, his eyes remained open, and I could not feel a pulse."

Homicide investigators said Williams was staying in the mobile home even though he had another listed address. Several neighbors including Womack said they had seen Williams in the neighborhood when he waved at them.

Womack said he just wishes he could have done more to save Williams' life.

"You try and help all you can, and when it don't work out, you just feel like you haven't done anything," he said. "It just tears your heart out.

Detectives have not commented on a suspect or motive for the fatal shooting.
