Frequent drive-by shootings in Durham concerning citizens
DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham police are searching for the gunman responsible for a drive-by shooting. It happened on the 5100 block of Avondale Drive on Saturday afternoon.
Police say a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg and a bullet grazed the back of his neck.
The victim drove to the 3600 block of Danube Lane where he called 911.
Durham Police Jose Lopez has said drive-by shootings are too frequent in the city. Community activists are also concerned.
"People are in denial, 'Well, it's not happening in my backyard, I don't have to worry about it,'" said Minister Paul Scott.
Scott has been meeting with the youth and other community members, saying he wants to tackle street violence.
"It seems like every other night there's a drive-by in Durham," said Scott.
Police say gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles on Avondale Drive and shots were fired into a home.
Nobody was injured in Saturday's shooting besides the victim. But, this past March an 11-year-old was hurt in a drive-by shooting on North Hyde Park Avenue. The child was hit by a bullet while playing in the front yard.
"These bullets from the drive-bys don't have a name on them," said Scott.
Scott has recently launched an initiative called the Closed Eye Project. He hopes Durham residents turning a blind eye to the violence will realize something needs to be done.
"Let's get our heads together right now; the churches, the public officials, and the community," said Scott. "Let's put our heads together and stop this drive-by epidemic before it grows out of proportion."
The victim's identity has not yet been released.
There have been no arrests in Saturday afternoon's shooting. The victim is expected to be okay.
