FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Fayetteville police are investigating a Dunn man's death after he was found dead in a car Thursday night.

The incident started around 9:30 p.m. when officers were called to the Value Place Hotel in the 700 block of West Rowan Street. Someone witnessed a man carrying an unconscious man to a gray 2004 Chevrolet Malibu in the hotel parking lot.

When officers arrived, the car was nowhere to be found. Authorities searched the area and spotted the car in the rear parking lot of Highsmith Rainey Express Care on Robeson Street, which is less than a mile from the hotel.

Police said a man was seen walking away from the car shortly after parking it at the hospital. He was gone by the time officers arrived.

A man in the backseat of the Malibu was declared dead at the scene. He was later identified as 23-year-old Christopher Pope, of Dunn. The car was registered to Pope's mother.

Pope's body is being sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh to determine his cause of death. Police said Friday there were no signs of visible trauma.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Homicide Squad are investigating the incident.
