RAEFORD, NC (WTVD) -- A Hoke County Sheriff's deputy was hurt early Friday in a two-car accident after leaving the county without permission while on duty.

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said Sgt. Samuel Morant, Jr. was in a crash at Raeford Road at Laneridge Way in Fayetteville around 8 a.m.

He suffered head injuries in the collision. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital and later transferred to UNC Hospital.

Peterkin said Morant is a patrol supervisor and left the county in his squad car without permission "for reasons unknown."

Peterkin said "Officers are required to get permission and approval from management when leaving the county and they must inform 911/communications via radio so it is documented in the system."

"As the Sheriff, I personally meet with administrative staff as well as the Deputies to keep an open communication in hopes to ensure that all Hoke County Sheriff Office Personnel is doing the right thing all the time. This type of behavior will not be tolerated," said Peterkin.
