Students have been complaining about the broken AC in Clayton High School

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Students in one Johnston County school say they've been uncomfortable for days because of broken air conditioning.

When students at Clayton High School left for the day Wednesday, many were happy to go somewhere the air conditioning was blasting.

"Everybody was complaining. Even the teachers were complaining," said sophomore Tyler Tuthill. "I was sweating," said Tuthill.

Kids were tweeting out photos of the thermostats and messaging their parents to show them how hot it was inside the school. Some of the pictures show the temperature reached nearly 83 degrees.

"We really didn't do much because it was so hot," said sophomore Michelle Johnson.

Students said they couldn't concentrate in class and teachers were shuffling them around the building trying to find cooler spots.

"We actually wound up getting out and going to a freshman building and it was just as hot in there," said senior Brittany Whitley. "And then my second block I actually sat in the hallway the whole class."

The AC was fixed Wednesday morning. The Johnston County School District says it took a long time for the rooms to cool down, though, due to the size of the building.

"The kids came home miserable. You'd like think that they're in good hands and [administrators are] making the best decision," said parent Aly Tuthill.

The district says they are in the process of upgrading the entire cooling system thanks to receiving some bond money. The district also said there have been no reports of heat exhaustion.
