CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The man accused of firing shots near the UNC Wellness Center in Cary appeared in a Wake County courtroom Friday afternoon.

He started shooting a military-style AR-15 rifle outside the gym Thursday evening on Stonecroft Lane off Green Level Church Road.

The 55-year-old got through an access door and into a mechanical room in the building before managers put the facility on lockdown. He never had access to the main facility.

911 Caller: "He's trying to get down to the basement. So he's in the stairwell right now. I've locked the front doors so that no one can get in or out through the front doors right now."

Police were forced to use a Taser stun gun to subdue the man when they arrived on the scene and he was taken to Cary Police Headquarters.

No one was injured.

An arrest warrant obtained by ABC11 Friday morning identifies the man as Anton Bezak Jr. of Newton Grove in Johnston County.

Why Bezak was near the gym isn't clear. A spokesperson said he is not a member or an employee and never has been. There is also no indication that he had any connection to the center or to staff members.

About 100 people who were inside the building were interviewed by police at a nearby daycare center.

The incident remains under investigation.

Bezak is charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property and going armed to the terror of people. Bond was set at $850,000. He was due to appear before a magistrate later Friday.

UNC Healthcare released a statement late Thursday which read, "UNC Healthcare would like to thank Cary Police for their quick response and resolution to this terrifying event. We are so thankful that no one was harmed. We will be assisting the police in any way we can as they continue their investigation."
