Man found shot to death near home
Police say a man has died after he was shot in the 600 block of E. Bay Street, near S. Washington Avenue in Dunn.

DUNN, N.C. (WTVD) -- The State Bureau of Investigations and Dunn police are investigating the murder of a man found shot in his home on Wednesday morning.

Lassiter Massey, Jr., 64, bled to death from a gunshot wound to the back of his right leg, authorities said.

Massey's body was discovered just before 9 a.m. Wednesday when someone went to check on him. Dunn police say that's when they responded to the man's home in the 600-block of East Bay Street.

They believe he was shot between midnight and 1 a.m. Authorities said more than one person broke into Massey's back door, but his body was discovered inside the front entrance to his home.

Police said the shooting was the result of an attempted robbery, although additional details were not available Wednesday.

"I just can't believe it," said Dorothy Massey-Brown, the victim's sister. "He ain't got nothing of value. Not like they said a lot jewelry or money. So I wouldn't want to rob nobody for nothing."

"You know he was kind of a low-key guy. So I mean, it's like to hear that this happened to him, it's like who would do something so heart-wrenching and terrible like that?" asked Massey's niece, Celestine Williams. "I mean in this day and time, it's just sad. I mean these people need to find Jesus."

Dunn police said they requested the SBI's assistance in the investigation due to limited local law enforcement resources.
