KATHMANDU, Nepal (WTVD) -- Authorities in Nepal expect the death toll to rise in the aftermath of the second strong earthquake to hit the country in less than three weeks.

Tuesday's quake struck in a remote mountain region, killing at least 37 people in Nepal, according to the latest figures from the country's Home Ministry. It was centered midway between the capital and Mount Everest, triggering landslides and toppling buildings.

ABC11 spoke with a North Carolina man Tuesday who is in Kathmandu helping residents recover from the first earthquake that hit last month.

"It's crazy that we're just digging out from one earthquake, and another one hits us," said Bob Clinton by Skype.

The quake terrified a nation still struggling to recover from the more powerful quake on April 25th that killed more than 8,150. That quake flattened entire villages and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

"When the first one hit, he said there were bricks flying everywhere, buildings were collapsing, all the motorcycles driving were tipping over, that was just 30 minutes after arriving in Kathmandu," said Robert Clinton, Clinton's son.

Robert is a doctor and is planning to join his father in Nepal.

In addition to the dead from Tuesday's quake, authorities in Nepal say more than 1,100 people were injured.

Clinton - from Southern Pines - and his wife started First Love International. It's a non-profit that operates children's homes in the hard-hit region.

"Everybody's outside setting up tents. Everybody's afraid, so they're standing outside," said Clinton. "There's more buildings that are falling down. I haven't really heard any news. The electricity's not working in the houses right now. "

In neighboring India, the home ministry says at least 16 people are confirmed dead after rooftops or walls collapsed onto them. Chinese media report one death in Tibet.

"Please remember all the Nepali people in your prayers. It's a very scary time for everybody," said Clinton.
