NC police officer risks life to stop wrong-way driver
A police officer in Winston-Salem risked his life to stop a suspected wrong-way drunk driver

WINSTON-SALEM (WTVD) -- A North Carolina police officer risked his life to stop a suspected wrong-way drunk driver early Sunday morning.

The Winston-Salem officer used his vehicle to ram the suspect on Highway 52 in Forsyth County. It happened around 12:40 a.m.

Police said the officer saw the suspect, Rafael Sandoval-Perez, driving an SUV north in the southbound lane. Officers followed in the northbound lane trying to get him to stop.

According to police, when the SUV hit another vehicle, the officer went into the southbound lane and rammed the suspect's vehicle.

Sandoval-Perez was charged with driving while impaired, speeding to elude arrest, hit-and-run, careless and reckless driving, speeding, operating without a license, driving the wrong way, and having an open container of alcohol in his car, according to police.

He suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital.
