One person hurt in officer-involved shooting
Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez called to scene after one person hurt in officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Authorities in Durham are investigating an officer-involved shooting that ended with one person seriously injured early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 2:15 a.m. in the 1500 block of Mathison Street, not far from the Durham Freeway and Burton Elementary School.

Police said officers were called to an apartment complex following a report about a "disturbance with a gun." Two people walking with a child witnessed someone firing a weapon.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez was later called to scene and told ABC11 that at least one shot was fired during the incident.

"The officers were called to the apartment complex and we're still trying to figure out what happened after that," he said.

A preliminary investigation later revealed that when officers arrived at the apartment, they saw a man holding a long gun and standing in a doorway. It's not clear if the man was the same person the 911 callers saw.

According to officials, Officer Brian Johnson told the man several times in Spanish to drop the gun, but he did not. Officer Johnson then fired at least one shot, which struck the man.

He was taken to Duke Hospital in critical condition, while another person, who was also inside an apartment, was questioned and released.

"Another individual was in the apartment and they are being interviewed," Lopez said.

Lopez said the man shot has a life-threatening head wound.

Police did not release the man's name, but relatives identified him as Cayetano Castro - who is in his early 20s.

Officer Johnson, who has been on the police force for over a decade according to Lopez, was not injured.

The shooting will be investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Police Department's Professional Standards Division, which is standard procedure.
