Pedestrian hit, killed in Durham

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Authorities in Durham are investigating a fatal accident after a pedestrian was hit and killed early Monday morning.

It happened just before 4:30 a.m. on Highway 70 at Cheek Road.

Authorities said an eastbound Freightliner tractor-trailer struck 50-year-old Jose Santos Martinez of Durham who was walking in the eastbound travel lanes of U.S. 70.

Martinez pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed did not appear to have been a factor. No charges have been filed.

Part of U.S. 70 was closed for several hours and later reopened around 8 a.m.
