Police investigating report of sexual assault at rest home in Johnston County

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Smithfield police are investigating a report that a disabled patient was sexually assaulted in her bed at a nursing home.

The incident reportedly happened around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smithfield House West on Hospital Road.

Authorities said the woman was awakened by a man in her bed who was sexually assaulting her.

Police said at least one other patient confirmed seeing the man as he fled out the door.

Investigators said the victim and witness did not recognize the individual.
