RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A 27-year-old woman kidnapped at gunpoint, and shot twice while trying to escape, is gaining strength.

Her father, James Fowler, shared new details about the horrific ordeal with ABC11 as police still search for those responsible.

Fowler said his daughter doesn't know who attacked her outside her Raleigh apartment the morning of July 2.

Police said around 12:30 a.m. the woman was returning home from work at a McDonald's in Holly Springs. As she got out of her car, a masked man with a gun forced her to get back behind the wheel and drive him back to the restaurant.

Once they got there, Fowler said the armed man got out of the car and his daughter "floored it." As she was driving away, the man shot and hit her twice, once in the arm and once in the side of her leg.

The woman drove herself to Cary WakeMed where she was treated. Fowler said that's when he got the call about what happened.

"She definitely not a victim," he said. "Anybody thinking she's a victim that's calling me, she said 'Hey, get that label off of me. I'm a survivor.'"

Fowler is a former Marine and said he's not surprised by his daughter's will to survive. He said she's leaning on her faith and is determined to set a good example for her young daughter.

"Her spirit and her strength delivered and brought me through," said Fowler. "So, if she can be tough and strong, you know, I've got to lace my boots back up and say, 'Let's be tough.'"

The Holly Springs Police Department is partnering with Raleigh police in their investigation. Holly Springs Detective Sgt. Mike Stone told ABC11 that they're interviewing several people and could name multiple suspects in this case.

Fowler said his daughter forgives her attacker. She is moving on from her managerial job at McDonald's and is looking forward to beginning a new chapter in her life.
