Spring Lake residents upset after century-old graves damaged
The graves at McNeil Street and Chapel Hill Road were damaged by crew clearing brush

SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities say crews working to clear brush around utility lines damaged headstones in a cemetery at McNeil Street and Chapel Hill Road just outside Spring Lake. Some of those graves date back to the early 1900's.

Trees and weeds had overtaken the tiny family cemetery. After a crew came through to clear the area, there were pieces of stone markers scattered about.

Kareem Taylor says he has distant relatives in the cemetery and says that the crew had no business touching it.

Relatives and one city worker say they tried to warn the crew about the graves, but claim the crew paid no attention.

Residents say there used to be a church next to the graves, but it's been gone for a century.

A Duke Power spokesperson told ABC11 a contract tree cutting crew may have accidentally damaged several grave markers while clearing a power line easement.
