Residents look for relief in heat
Health officials issued warnings to Sandhills residents Tuesday amid record high temperatures and a soaring heat index.

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Health officials issued warnings to Sandhills residents Tuesday amid record high temperatures and a soaring heat index.

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health reminded residents to check on elderly neighbors, avoid leaving children and pets in cars where temperatures rise rapidly, and to stay hydrated.

Tuesday's heat advisory warned of temperatures and a heat index above 100 degrees.

At the Big T's Grill Sno-Balls and Ice Cream in Hope Mills, large fans were placed around the patio as people brought their children out for some relief.

The heat has been draining, said 13-year-old MacKenzie Nesbitt.

"(I'm) tired," the teen sighed as she ate her cool treat. "Yeah, and really sweaty. Ugh."

"It's rough," said Stephon Singleton, who took his children to the Chalmer's Pool. "We try to stay cool. Pretty much come to this park right here where the water is."

Jazmia Bey operates admissions at the pool where she said many people have lined up before opening and stayed until closing this week.

"(I'm) miserable watching them swim around in nice cool water and I'm up here at the hot desk," she laughed, standing in front of a large fan she borrowed from the Fuller Recreation Center next door.

On Tuesday the city confirmed its second pool opening is slated for Aug. 1. The pool is located at the Westover Recreation Center where crews completed finishing touches on Tuesday.

Its highly-anticipated opening will be at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting, said Michael Gibson, director of Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation.
