FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- There was a very special street naming ceremony Tuesday in Cumberland County. It was all to honor the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retired Four Star General Hugh Shelton.

Hugh Shelton Circle is just across the street from his statue at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville.

At the event, Shelton called Fort Bragg the greatest installation in the U.S. military and urged community leaders to help protect it from budget cuts.

Speaking to a group of Fayetteville real estate agents, Shelton said Fort Bragg remains one of the most strategically important military installations in the world.

Shelton warned that budget reductions and the drawdown of troops will have a disastrous effect.

"Our leadership here in the local community needs to go back to the secretary of defense, to elected officials -- two senators and congressman from the region," said Shelton. "You need to say 'Wait a minute. Time out. What are you doing to help fix this?'"

Shelton is a North Carolina native.
