Suspect arrested following string of break-ins
Alleged robbery suspect in custody after crashing a car while trying to get away from police.

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man is in custody in Wake County after crashing a reportedly stolen car while trying to get away from police early Thursday morning.

It all started just before 5 a.m. off Walnut Street in Cary, when a woman called police to report four men stealing her vehicle.

"Officers were responding to that call when they saw three vehicles come out of a small street," Lt. Marcus Pearson with the Cary Police Department said. "Two of them were able to make it through the light. Third one acted like he was going to stop. They went to stop him with the blue lights. He took off, (so) we turned our blue lights off."

Police said the third car ended up fleeing down the wrong side of Walnut Street before losing control, crossing a median, and hitting a van.

The suspect then ran into a nearby greenway, but was hunted down by a police dog and bitten.

"That brush is so thick that the dog jumped into the brush that when he did, he kind of jumped on the guy, (and) made his initial bite," Pearson said.

The suspect, Rashaad McKnight, has been charged with stealing a vehicle, fleeing from police, being a habitual felon, and five counts of breaking into vehicles.

One of the victims said she didn't even know her car was broken into until hours later.

"This is the first time I've been out here this morning, so it's kind of sad," Jackie Marlett said. "Luckily, I don't keep anything valuable in my car. Does not shock me, which is sad too."

Marlett said her vehicle was unlocked and it's been broken into before.

"She's a good car, but she's my backup so I'm not too worried," said Marlett.
