DURHAM (WTVD) -- The suspect charged with fatally shooting a Durham apartment complex manager earlier this week made his first appearance in court Friday.

Police arrested 21-year-old Shatique Skinner Thursday in connection with the death of 52-year-old Fred "Mr. Fred" Edgerton.

Edgerton, a retired Marine, was shot and killed just after 8:40 a.m. at Oakley Square Apartments. Residents at the complex said he was hired to beef up security.

Authorities have not released a motive in the case, but have said the crime was not random. The DA has yet to decide whether Skinner will face the possibility of the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Skinner has four prior criminal offenses, including attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Skinner learned in court Friday that he will not be released on bond, as Edgerton's family arrived in town for memorial services.

Edgerton's daughter had a message for the suspect.

"You have got to be the dumbest person I know to take that man from the kids, from the community," Danielle Edgerton said. "He did no wrong no harm. All he wanted to do was help people."

Edgerton's visitation and funeral are set for Saturday at noon at the Triangle Christian Center in Raleigh. The family says it's open to the public.
