Suspect sought following incident on NCCU's campus
A Durham police officer was injured while responding to an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Durham police officer and a North Carolina Central University campus police officer were injured during an incident on campus Wednesday night.

The incident started when two NCCU police officers went to a residence hall for a safety discussion and spotted an illegally parked vehicle near Lawson Street and Alston Avenue.

When they asked the driver for identification, authorities said the suspect became uncooperative, and then drove off, hitting one of the officers.

The injured officer then fired his gun at the fleeing white Dodge Charger.

When Durham police arrived to assist the NCCU officers, a police cruiser was hit by on-coming traffic. Witnesses at the scene said it appeared the Durham Police Department cruiser somehow got sandwiched between two cars.

Both the NCCU officer and a Durham police officer were taken to the hospital with injuries, but are expected to recover.

Police later charged the alleged driver of the car that started the incident - James Henry Nelson IV, 22, of Durham - with assault with a deadly weapon. School officials say Nelson is not an NCCU student.

Anyone with information regarding Nelson's whereabouts should contact the NCCU Police Department at (919)530-6106 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
