Teen, police officer struck by lightning at Topsail Beach

TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A police officer responding to a call about a girl being struck by lightning was also struck Sunday evening, WWAY reports.

Topsail Beach Police Chief Sam Gervase said Sgt. Zach Cooke was responding to a report about a 14-year-old girl being struck by lightning around 5 p.m. near Serenity Point.

Gervase said teen was taken to the hospital and the officer was struck by lightning while leaving the beach. So far no word on her condition.

The officer was also taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK, according to Gervase.
