Vigil held on day 5th arrest made in Chapel Hill shooting
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- More than 200 people came out to Chapel Hill on Thursday night to share memories and sing songs in honor of Malik Brown-Burnette.
He was just 18, gunned down in a cul-de-sac on Tuesday night, a victim of senseless violence. And his exit from this world, all too soon.
"So a good friend will stand by you through thick and thin," said Thurman Hines, pastor of Refresh Life Ministries. "And they're going to seek the best out of you. I saw the best come out of that 18-year-old young man."
Family and friends say he was well-liked, respectable, and an all-around good person.
"Malik was not some hood rat, drug dealer," said his cousin, Lavonda Burnette. "His life meant more than three to four hundred dollars."
With a heavy heart, community organizer "Equality" wants to make sure there are more outlets for kids and teens. She's helping promote "Malik's Village," a program designed to promote healthy lifestyles and activities for youth.
"We have to come together as a community so this doesn't happen. These kids don't have nothing to do. And if you don't have something constructive to do, they're going to find something destructive to do," Equality said.
Earlier in the day, the fifth person wanted in connection with the shooting was arrested in South Carolina.
Denzel Lamont Spikes, 23, of Shelby, was arrested in Lexington, S.C., and is awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
Spikes is the last to be apprehended for the double shooting that left Malik dead and another person injured Tuesday night.
The other victim, 18-year-old Tanner Cobb of Chapel Hill, is in stable condition and still being treated.
The following people were also arrested for the shooting: Laquida Shuntae Poston, 26, of Shelby; Ranaire Lewis II, 22, of Shelby; Thomas Oliver, 30, of Gastonia; and Jalen Raekwon Hackney, 18, of Burlington.
All five suspects are facing first-degree murder charges and attempted murder charges. They also face robbery and accessory charges.
All suspects, except for Spikes, are being held at the Orange County Jail without bond. Their next court date is set for August 15.
