RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Wake County school bus driver is accused of hitting a 7-year-old boy on a bus.

The incident allegedly happened March 3 in the 300 block of Upchurch Street in Apex.

According to a warrant, 69-year-old Merle Jeanette Carr is charged with assault on a child and misdemeanor child abuse.

The warrant says Carr grabbed and pulled the boy's left arm and hit his left hand numerous times causing him to fall backwards - and risking injury.

Investigators said Carr was trying to find out what the boy had in his hand when it happened.

She was charged Thursday after detectives consulted with the District Attorney.

The Wake County Public Schools said Carr has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the case.
