Man charged in fatal Fayetteville shooting
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Police in Fayetteville have charged a man in a shootout that left a woman dead Tuesday evening.
It happened just before 5 p.m. in a home in the 800 block of Amye Street.
Detectives said it was argument that turned into an altercation, a gunfight, and then murder.
"It was a gunfight. There was more than just one shooter," said Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock.
A relative of the family that lives in the home said the shooting stemmed from an earlier confrontation.
"Earlier today a lady she came up. She got into a confrontation with my sister's son," said Janet McBryde. "She left and came back and brought seven to eight people with her, and they shot up my sister's house."
Police said the woman, later identified as 50-year-old Lynne McElvine Umerah, was shot during the gunfight. She was found near the front door of a home gravely injured. Umerah was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The police chief said his first officers on the scene tried to help her.
"The officers worked really hard to try and provide lifesaving," said Medlock. "They did all they could while trying to make sense of what was going on because it was pretty chaotic when the officers rolled up."
Several children and adults in the house were not hurt.
While Medlock was headed to the crime scene, authorities said he spotted a vehicle matching the description of the possible suspect vehicle and stopped it near Newark Street. One of the occupants in the vehicle, 20-year-old Raheem Jaron McBryde of Amye Street, was detained and questioned by police.
He was later charged with second-degree murder and is currently at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $500,000 bond.
The gunfight occurred less than 24 hours after Medlock spoke at a prayer vigil for the nine church members killed in Charleston. He said then that the violence has to stop. However, Tuesday's shooting is a testament that the violence continues.
