FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A Fayetteville woman saved a man, his son, and the family dog from a burning home Wednesday.

The fire happened just before 5 p.m. in the 700 block of Prestige Boulevard. Toni Jenkins said she saw smoke as she was driving by her neighbor's house.

Jenkins ran to the door and frantically knocked. Her neighbor, Darold Whitmore had no idea his fence was on fire and the flames were spreading to the house.

Whitmore and his teenage son escaped and started spraying a garden hose to the fence. Jenkins reportedly ran inside the smoking house to save the Whitmores' dog.

Everyone made it out safe, Fayetteville officials said.

"He didn't know why I was running towards his house! He got kinda scared, but he was thankful," Jenkins said.

Fayetteville fire investigators say the home suffered considerable damage to the roof and attic. Officials said the fire began in a plastic trash bin near the house.

An investigation into the cause is underway.
