NC delegation casts votes for Trump but some still divided
CLEVELAND (WTVD) -- ABC11 was on the convention floor as Donald Trump's home state of New York cast the final ballots, making him the official presidential nominee for the Republican Party. Screens flashed "over the top," and the soundtrack played the iconic "New York, New York."
Dr. Ada Fisher cast North Carolina's 29 votes for Trump. The Durham native is proud of her allegiance to the businessman.
"My state know I'm crazy about Donald Trump, and I think he is the right man for this time," Fisher said.
Twenty-nine of North Carolina's 72 delegates voted for Trump; not everyone agrees with Dr. Fisher.
Larry Schug is a Wake County business owner and convention delegate. He says he won't be part of the process to unify Republicans. He says he thinks the Republican Party has left behind prudent government spending.
"They've taken our budget, which is an extreme that we shouldn't have, and we keep adding on to it," said Schug.
Others in the delegation, such as Joyce Cotten and her daughter Kim, believe the party can get behind Trump. They are a mother/daughter delegate duo from Chatham County.
"We're republicans. Are independent thinkers we're always going to have that diversity. That's what makes us great," said Cotten-West.
Meanwhile, North Carolina senator Thom Tillis predicts by next month, the Republican Party will be unified and solidified in supporting Trump.
"Hour by hour, we're winning more and more people over, doing exactly what you do. Your team doesn't win the playoffs, we've got one team in the playoffs and you've got to support them - this is the Super Bowl of politics and I'm here to support my conference leader," Tillis said.
Earlier Tuesday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan spoke to the crowd at the convention, invigorating the North Carolina delegation.
"I think you all know, North Carolina is a really important state," he said.

Duane Cutlip is a Wake County delegate who's ready to go to work helping fellow North Carolina Republicans running for office win in November.
"I think the delegates are charged up and ready to go back and elect Republicans to solve the problems of the state and the nation from the top down," said Cutlip.
But Tuesday tonight, it's about celebrating the new nominee at the Republican convention.
Dr. Fisher has battled health problems, but she's feeling great tonight. "My heart is wonderful tonight. And it'll be better when Americans wise up and vote for Donald Trump."
