Wake County is gearing up for early voting. The ballot boxes are lined up and the tabulator set at the Herbert C. Young Community Center in Cary.

The county will have 20 early voting sites. Nine sites open Thursday while the other 11 open Oct. 27. Early voting for the 2016 General Election ends at 1 pm on Nov 5.

With such a long window to vote early, Mary Grace Corr, of the Wake County Board of Elections, said these sites tend to have shorter lines. She said there are other perks to voting early.

"If they have lived in Wake County for 30 days, they can come and register to vote here and vote same day during early voting," Corr said. "And say you live in Fuquay but work in Raleigh, you can vote at a Raleigh location. You don't have that constraint of going to your precinct."

With such a heated Presidential race, Corr explained they've enlisted a group of retired police officers to monitor early voting sites.

"There's a team of about 15 of them." Corr said. "They just are going to kind of rove around to each site and mainly they're going to help with kind of line control, if our signs get vandalized putting those back right."

Corr also said they can quell any protests that might go too far. But of course, the hope is early voting goes smoothly.

Corr said it's a good idea to go over your sample ballot before you vote so you're familiar with the ballot when you vote.
