Did you know you can create a magnetic field with a few simple items? For this experiment, you'll need copper wire, one battery, an iron nail and some paper clips or small washes. Follow along with ABC11 Science Club with BASF and discover how to get started! Adult supervision and safety goggles are required.

What is an electromagnet?

An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current is turned off. Electromagnets usually consist of a large number of closely spaced turns of wire that create the magnetic field.
