Designer vs inexpensive sunglasses - is more expensive better?

The sunglasses business is a big business and designer names can cost big bucks. But, when it comes to price tags on sunglasses, experts say more cost doesn't necessarily mean more protection.

"Cost does not mean you're going to have better protection," explained Dr. David Weitz, Optometrist at Eye Care Center on Fayetteville Street in Downtown Raleigh.

"You can get a decent pair of sunglasses for $100 dollars," Weitz said.

Dr. Weitz says the biggest factor when choosing a lens comes down to UVA/UVB protection.

"If it has 100% UVA/UVB that is the most important thing," said Weitz.

"Don't waste your money on one that doesn't have the label on there," Weitz said. "If the label is on there 100% UVA UVB protection, you're guaranteed that lens has the protection you need."

Weitz also says to look for frames that wrap around the eye to protect from all angles and points out a grey tinted lens wont distort your perception of colors.

He says a more costly lens can translate into a more stylish, and durable product, but, a good lens to protect your eyes doesn't have to break the bank.

"A lot of time, if its a more expensive frame, it's going to have a little more durability," Weitz said.

"The quality of the optics in the lenses is goning to be much nicer. In a cheaper lens, you might get some distortion across the surface of the lens and it might not make things look as clear."
