MoneySaver: Flash sales offer short term deals with big savings
Registering for sites specializing in flash sales can help you save big when it comes to specialty items like home merchandise.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- If you're looking for home merchandise with huge discounts, flash sales are a quick way to snag a deal.

There are sites that specialize in flash sales including gilthome.com, onekingslane.com, and hautelook.com and the savings are generous.

"You'll receive emails that will notify you of the items that were just recently put on flash sale," said Mike Althoff, General Manager of the online furniture consignment site Moveloot.com which has a warehouse in Durham. "So, you'll kind of be first to know about that $39 sofa or that $58 countertop table that has come in and is now on sale."

Moveloot.com recently expanded into Charlotte and Atlanta with all consigned items processed in the Triangle. The website has also just launched their own flash sales for consumers looking for furniture and home items.

"A great example is we sold a sofa just this weekend that was on flash sale that had been on our site for $360," said Althoff. "We bumped the price down to $35. It obviously sold very fast.

Everything on Moveloot.com is normally 20-80 percent off retail anyways, because it is used. Although, we certainly do a quality check of those items. But, these flash sale items can be upwards of 90 plus percent off."

To take advantage of flash sales, you register your email address on each site you are interested in receiving notifications from. You usually have to act fast because, in many cases, the sales only last one or two days with limited quantity. In Moveloot.com's case, the new flash sale feature is the last chance sale-before items get donated to local charities including the Raleigh based Green Chair Project.

"At the end of the day, whether the season has changed, the style has changed and you've got inventory you've got to get rid of, this is a way to make it move," said Althoff.

It's also a way to snag a tremendous deal in a flash.
