Local girl gives away all of her money to other children
Ten-year-old Isabel Crespo saved hey money for a whole year to help others in need.

ANGIER, N.C. (WTVD) -- Remember when you were young, and saved all your money for that special toy or game?

Ten-year-old Isabel Crespo did that. She saved all her money for a whole year -- from birthday and Christmas money to babysitting cash. She even made money selling rubber band bracelets.

So, what did she want so badly? To help other children.

Last week, Isabel emptied her piggy bank and gave away $105.

When asked how she came up with that idea, Isabel said she "saw pictures of needy children on the internet and TV. Seeing the pictures, it made me sad and it was like, I should donate money because they don't have many things."

When is the last time we thought like a child?

Isabel's mother said this is not the first time her daughter has given from her heart to help others.

"When she was 6, she came to me and asked if she could cut her hair off and donate it to 'Locks For Love," said Jennifer Crespo-Zagata. "So, we took her to a salon. They cut it off, and she donated it."

This time, Isabel donated her savings to local group in Angier that helps needy children. It's called "To Make a Child Smile Foundation."

Cindy Hunter, the foundation's treasurer, was touched by Isabel's generosity.

"If a child gives everything they have saved all year, and they want to give it to someone else that needs it worse, then that is special," said Hunter.

The Foundation helps hundreds of needy children, and takes them on a Christmas shopping trip each year. The tradition began in 2000 when Gary Hughes and his wife took three underprivileged children Christmas shopping. Since then, it has grown into a huge community event with hundreds of volunteers.

"If it wasn't for the community, the generous people in our area and the county, it wouldn't be successful like it is," said Hughes.

While $105 may not sound like that much, it's all Isabel had, and she willingly gave it all away. Now, she is saving her money to give to children in the hospital.
