CARY (WTVD) -- Giant checks were presented at the state capitol Thursday to symbolize a major donation made by Kangaroo Express to North Carolina-based military support programs.

"This private sector involvement from Kangaroo, a great company that's headquartered right in Cary, North Carolina, it sends a very strong message to our veterans to help conclude Veterans Day week," said Governor Pat McCrory.

In all, the company is giving $516,000 to North Carolina groups including the US Veterans Corps, the Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund, and the USO of North Carolina.

"Kangaroo Express did a marvelous job," said the president of North Carolina's USO, John Falkenbury. "The money they raised just for USO of NC alone allows us to sustain our current operations, the homecomings and deployments, while growing critical resiliency, transition assistance programs, financial literacy programs."

The money was raised in Kangaroo Express convenience stores in 13 states between the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

It's part of the Cary-based company's ongoing commitment to our military members through their "Salute our Troops" campaign.

"Over the past four summers, generous store guests and our vendor partners have helped us raise more than $10 million for servicemembers and their families across the southeast," Kangaroo Express CEO Dennis Hatchell explained.

As for why the company feels so strongly about making donations like the one they did Thursday, they said more than half of their stores are located within 25 miles of a military installation, so they're trying to give back to the very customers they serve.
