Show of support etched into a wounded warrior's new home

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wednesday, volunteers and vendors associated with "Operation: Coming Home" put some personal touches on a home being built for Corporal Nathan Jakubisin.

The Ohio native was selected to receive this mortgage-free home being built for him in Fuquay-Varina after suffering serious injuries in a bomb blast in Afghanistan almost two years ago. While crews work to finish the home, the attic will remain unfinished, and that's where words of thanks, well wishes, and more can be found scrawled across the framework.

Words of thanks, well wishes, and more can be found scrawled across the framework of the new home.

"I'm hoping he'll feel tied to the community and want to stay here and maybe build an even larger family and put down some roots and feel very welcomed," explained Shannon Elderdice with PulteGroup.

And while it might not seem like much, to those who have served, they know that small gestures like these can go a long way.

"It shows that the community and people around you really appreciate what you do and these guys come home and sometimes they have a hard time feeling that they're getting back, getting adjusted into the community," said Corporal Walt Baughman with Veterans Corp.

That's why Centex employees and Raleigh area contractors, including the builder, PulteGroup, are proud to donate their time and materials to the project.

"This is, out of all the homes I've built, this has the most meaning. It's probably the most rewarding house I've built in my 16 years with the company," offered Joe Cusumano with PulteGroup.

That builder for PulteGroup was presented with an American flag that flew from a crane at the groundbreaking ceremony back in May.

As for Corporal Jakubisin, he was not at the home Wednesday while undergoing further medical treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center. But, he, his wife, and their young son Mason will be there for the key ceremony tentatively scheduled for September 11.
