Caleb Swanigan, No. 8 in ESPN 100, commits to Michigan St.

Caleb Swanigan, one of the best high school prospects in the country, announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday night.

Swanigan, a 6-foot-8 post player out of Homestead High in Indiana, is ranked No. 8 in the ESPN 100 for the 2015 class. He chose the Spartans over the likes of California, Duke, Purdue and Kentucky.

Swanigan didn't truly dive in to the recruiting process until the past few months, getting a late start due to the fact that he reclassified from the 2016 class last spring. However, he developed a relationship with Spartans coach Tom Izzo, and that won him over.

"They do a lot of great things there," Swanigan told ESPN.com recently. "Tom Izzo is a great coach, he's a man of March. He's going to put me in a very good position to be successful."

Swanigan's addition gives Michigan State the pieces to be a contender in the Big Ten again. He joins fellow five-star recruit Deyonta Davis (No. 14) and two four-star shooting guards, including sharpshooter Matt McQuaid (No. 67). West Virginia transfer Eron Harris also is eligible, while the Spartans will welcome back Denzel Valentine, Bryn Forbes and Lourawls Nairn, among others.

Swanigan's choosing Michigan State also puts a wrench in the package-deal idea for California. The plan for the Golden Bears was to get Swanigan and Ivan Rabb (No. 6), and then convince Jaylen Brown (No. 2) to join the fold. This makes Rabb essentially a must-get for Cal coach Cuonzo Martin.
