Gary Kubiak 'disappointed' with Ryan Murphy; Broncos moving on

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Wednesday he was "disappointed'' to send rookie safety Ryan Murphy back to Denver after the practice squad player had been detained by police as part of a prostitution sting just a few miles from the team's hotel.

Murphy was sent home Tuesday night shortly after he was detained and questioned by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. The Broncos said Murphy was released at the scene -- a San Jose hotel -- and investigators determined he had not been involved in a crime.

However, Kubiak said the Broncos still elected to send Murphy back to Denver. Murphy, a former seventh-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks, was signed to the Broncos' practice squad in November.

"Yeah, there's disappointment, but it's been dealt with and we've moved on,'' Kubiak said Wednesday. "I dealt with it [Tuesday], and obviously disappointed for the young man, but we're focused on what we have to do football-wise, we're on work [Wednesday] morning with our meetings and getting into our routine. So we've moved on.''

The Broncos' practice squad players are not on the team's 53-player roster, so they are not eligible to play in Super Bowl 50. But the Broncos brought the group to California to practice with the team.

Kubiak addressed the issue in a team meeting Tuesday night.

"Coach Kubiak made it clear, everybody has to be accountable,'' linebacker Brandon Marshallsaid. "That's an unfortunate situation, that he had to go home, because I think he's a good guy. Just unfortunate.''

Murphy is an Oakland, California, native.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that the sting involved Murphy's brother. The paper, citing sources, said the pair was questioned by sheriff's deputies Tuesday evening at a Motel 6 in north San Jose.

Murphy's brother, according to multiple reports, was cited for solicitation.
