Mike Montgomery, AD to meet

California coach Mike Montgomery will inform athletic director Sandy Barbour of his future at a scheduled meeting Monday in Berkeley.

Multiple sources said Montgomery had been leaning toward retirement as late as last week. Sources told ESPN.com that Cal has sought out the help of a search firm and has investigated the possibility of successors in light of the Final Four coming up this week in Arlington, Texas, where coaches will congregate.

Sources said Montgomery hasn't informed Barbour, his staff or players yet of his decision, but the administration has been preparing for this eventuality.

Montgomery has had one of the most successful runs in Cal history after a stellar career at rival Stanford.

Montgomery led the Bears to a 21-14 overall record, 10-8 in the Pac-12 this past season. The Golden Bears' season ended last Wednesday at SMU in the NIT quarterfinals.

Montgomery has coached the Bears for six seasons, leading them to four NCAA tournament appearances.

His run at Stanford is widely regarded as the best run ever at the school. He led the Cardinal for 18 seasons, which included 12 NCAA tournament appearances, a 1998 Final Four and 2001 Elite Eight appearance. He coached multiple NBA players, including a number of high-level draft picks.

Montgomery spent two seasons coaching the Golden State Warriors, going 68-96 in the two seasons. Montgomery was able to have the unique experience of staying in the Bay Area and coaching all three of the top men's basketball jobs.

Montgomery, who also coached at Montana, has won 677 games in Division I. Montgomery, 67, is a cancer survivor. He went through bladder cancer surgery in 2011.
