Jordan Spieth will begin his bid for a second leg of golf's Grand Slam alongside a pair of fellow potential contenders at the U.S. Open, beginning Thursday.

The reigning Masters champion is grouped with 2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose and Jason Day, starting at 5:17 p.m. ET at Chambers Bay as Spieth attempts to become the first player since Tiger Woods to win the year's first two major championships.

Speaking of Woods, he will be in the group just behind Spieth, competing with Louis Oosthuizen and Rickie Fowler, who won his first Players Championship title last month.

Fresh off a 71st-place finish at last week's Memorial Tournament that included a third-round 85, Woods will be playing his first U.S. Open since 2013, when he finished T-32 at Merion Golf Club. He hasn't claimed a top-10 at this event since a fourth-place finish in 2010 and hasn't won since 2008 at Torrey Pines, the last of his 14 major championship titles.

Rory McIlroy will attempt to win a second U.S. Open title and a third major in the past four, starting at 11:28 a.m. ET Thursday. He will be playing with defending champion Martin Kaymer and Gunn Yang, who won last year's U.S. Amateur title.

McIlroy will play the course for the first time Saturday in a practice round.

"It's a bit of an unknown for everyone, Chambers Bay," he said. "From what I've heard, it's going to be sort of different."

Phil Mickelson, a six-time U.S. Open runner-up who is still seeking his first win to complete the career Grand Slam, is playing alongside a pair of fellow major champions in Angel Cabrera and Bubba Watson. They will tee off at 10:33 a.m. ET.

Other featured groups includeDustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott; Hideki Matsuyama, Graeme McDowell and Matt Kuchar; Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley and Kevin Na; Jimmy Walker, Zach Johnson and Ian Poulter; and Geoff Ogilvy, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, who own a combined five U.S. Open titles.

In what will be a popular move by the USGA, local resident Michael Putnam, who played in the first group at Chambers Bay when the course opened in 2007, will be the first player off the first tee Thursday morning.

Playing to a par 70, Chambers Bay will play between 7,200 and 7,600 yards. The tournament will include 156 competitors, with the low 60 and ties making the cut to the weekend.
