RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A man has been charged in connection with a domestic kidnapping in Raleigh Friday morning that ended in a crash on New Bern Avenue.

It all started around 4:45 a.m. when officers were called to an apartment in the 200 block of Merrell Drive about a kidnapping.

Police said a woman was taken from her apartment by 22-year-old Jonathan Xavier Mejia during what they called a "domestic situation," and forced into a vehicle.

A few minutes later that same vehicle crashed in the 3800 block of New Bern Avenue.

Images from the scene showed an SUV flipped over on its roof in the parking lot of Plastics and Fiber Glass Products. The woman was taken to WakeMed with unknown injuries.

Mejia has been charged with reckless driving to endanger, felony serious injury by vehicle, resisting public officer, driving while impaired, first degree kidnapping, and misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.

An eyewitness told ABC11 about the man storming up the stairs to the woman's apartment, and he wasn't surprised at all.

"I heard her screaming. I heard her screaming and I left. I don't want no part of it," said Fredrick Miller. "I don't know what was going on. I don't know if he had a weapon or anything and such. So, I left."

Miller said his girlfriend called 911.

The accident shut down eastbound New Bern Avenue between Trawick Road and Corporation Parkway for over three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Mejia is being held at the Wake County Detention Center.
