APEX, NC (WTVD) -- A big-rig carrying brand new VWs slammed into a highway overpass Wednesday morning, crushing the vehicles on the top level of the car hauler.

It happened on Highway 64 where the railroad overpass crosses the highway between Laura Duncan road and Davis Drive.

The bridge is not considered especially low, so it's not clear why the accident happened. The cars were apparently loaded on the truck high.

The accident remains under investigation.
