Driver walks away from rollover wreck on I-540 near I-40

DURHAM (WTVD) -- One driver is lucky to have walked away from an impressive wreck off the toll road Sunday morning.

The driver rolled a Cadillac Escalade while leaving I-540 to get onto I-40.

The vehicle appeared to have rolled over several times, hitting some trees, before it landed right side up.

Despite all of the damage it sustained, the driver was able to get out, and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

There's no word yet on that person's condition.

Officials told ABC11 crew on the scene that they are looking into whether the driver might have been impaired or simply have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The area was briefly shut down around 7 a.m. because of all the debris littering the roadway, but it has since been reopened.
