HENDERSON, NC (WTVD) -- A tractor-trailer accident Saturday afternoon in Vance County shut down all lanes of I-85 North at Exit 214 in Henderson.

One lane of the highway reopened around 10 p.m., but the left lane will remain closed for days.

The truck was heading north around 3:30 p.m. when the driver skidded off the road and slammed into a bridge, according to Henderson's fire chief.

The tractor-trailer then went off the highway and into a ditch.

The driver was able to crawl out of the vehicle through the passenger's side.

The fire chief says he doesn't know the extent of the driver's injuries, but the driver was sent to Duke Medical Center for treatment.

The fire chief said the bridge has severe damage. The DOT said repair work could run through June 6.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what led to the driver veering off the road.
