Pay to park app
A new app should make it easier to park around NC State.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- No more fumbling for change or driving around in circles looking for a place to park around NC State University.

The city of Raleigh is trying out a mobile payment program for Hillsborough Street to see if it will work along a corridor that will soon be packed with students.

The idea is, if it works there, it could work anywhere.

Imagine not having to keep change in your car to have to keep feeding the parking meter. With the new mobile payment app, you can keep that change for something else.

With the passport parking app, you can pay to park on your smartphone for the stretch of Hillsborough from Oberlin Road to Gardner Street.

Right now, several private lots around downtown use the passport app. You will start seeing those signs along Hillsborough. You enter the parking zone you're in the parking space number, then pay on the app and it'll let you know when you're about to run out of time. You can refill the meter remotely on the app.

The app's technology also lets parking enforcement know when time is up on a space.

Now that council approved the pilot program Tuesday, it will start Oct. 17 and run until Jan. 6 -- so keep change in your car around NC State until then.
