RALEIGH (WTVD) -- We're going to see plenty of cold days this winter, but the experts at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said Thursday that overall in the south we can look forward to slightly warmer and drier weather.

In its U.S. Winter Outlook, NOAA said the weather pattern known as La Nina - where the water temperatures in the Eastern Central Pacific Ocean are cooler than normal - will likely develop in the late fall or early winter.

La Nina generally means wetter and colder winters in the northern U.S. and better conditions for us.

"Regardless of the outlook, there is always some chance for extreme winter weather, so prepare now for what might come later this winter," said Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.

NOAA said it puts out its seasonal outlooks to help communities prepare for what's likely to come in the next few months and minimize weather's impacts on lives and livelihoods.
