Severe storms create flood problems across the Triangle
Strong winds brought down trees and power lines, and rising water cut-off key roads and stalled commuters trying to make their way home from work.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A wild night of weather in the Triangle Thursday, after swift-moving storms rolled through.

A driver needed to be rescued along Hillsborough Street in Raleigh after getting stuck going through standing water.

In the downtown area, at the corner of Davie Street and Blount Street, water was gushing on the roadway. Traffic signals were knocked out and police directed drivers through pools of water.

"I've never seen anything like this before in Raleigh. I was nervous," said Raleigh resident Katy Thomas.

Strong winds brought down power lines and utility crews scrambled to make repairs. Thousands of customers were in the dark.

There was extensive flash flooding in Clayton at a car dealership. Water was hitting the rims on most vehicles.

Christopher Anthony's car was ruined after it was partly submerged in water from flash flooding. He wasn't able to move his car out of a parking lot before the water quickly began rising.

"Nothing works anymore," said Anthony. "My car was at the sewer right there and I guess I was the last one to know about the heavy rain."
