Ski resort prepares for winter
A ski resort in western NC is getting ready for winter

HAYWOOD COUNTY, North Carolina (WTVD) -- People manning the ski slopes in western North Carolina braved the frigid temperatures this weekend.

About 50 snow guns are firing at the Cataloochee ski area in Haywood County. Workers are given gear to match the temperature.

"We got down to about 12 degrees last night, and typically the coldest night of any front is the first night," said Cataloochee General Manager Chris Bates. "We found that exposure issues start being a potential issue when it gets below 10, and certainly if the wind picks up."

Bates said the frigid air is just the right temperature to lay down a good base. Temperatures at Cataloochee are near freezing Sunday.
