CHAPEL HILL, NC (WTVD) -- Chatham County officials reported an acid spill near Jordan Lake Tuesday morning that shut down Farrington Point Road from Martha's Chapel Road northbound to Old Farrington Road.

Deputies at the scene said a truck carrying containers of the muriatic or hydrochloric acid went through the intersection of Farrington Point Road and Lystra Road. Although the truck did not wreck or overturn, containers of the acid apparently fell from the truck as it made its turn at the intersection, deputies said.

Because of quick response from emergency personnel, it is estimated that less than 2 gallons of the chemical were involved in the spill, a spokesperson for the Chatham County Sheriff's Office said.

The acid was neutralized before any groundwater or surrounding waterways could be contaminated, the spokesperson said. She said there is no expected impact on Jordan Lake itself.

The spill was cleaned up and roads reopened just before 2 p.m.
