Fayetteville's downtown needs big ideas and big money

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- It's going to take some big ideas and big money to move Fayetteville's historic downtown into the future.

That was the word Wednesday from a group of big-time real estate and business developers who the city asked to help move downtown forward.

The team spent Tuesday and Wednesday touring downtown looking for ways the historic district can grow. They told community leaders the key to downtown's future is people, building more apartments and homes, marketing more office space, and less vacant buildings.

They said a proposed baseball field will certainly help make downtown more family friendly.

Former Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne, president of the Downtown Business Alliance called the suggestions challenging, but doable.

"It's always about the money, you know, but we can't let that stop us from dreaming in our community," he offered.

A more detailed report of the ideas and suggestions should be released in about eight weeks.
