RALEIGH (WTVD) -- More than 1,500 athletes are competing in the Special Olympics Summer Games this weekend.
The athletes are challenging each other in aquatics, gymnastics, powerlifting, and several other sports.
The games are happening at multiple venues across Raleigh and Cary, including the Triangle Aquatic Center and Carmichael Gym.
This weekend's Summer Games are a chance for athletes from around the state to go for the gold and have a lot of fun.
The Special Olympics Flame of Hope is making its way through our state in support of the games.
Next Tuesday in Durham, the ABC11 team will take part in the Unified Relay.
Big Weather Don Schwenneker and weekend anchor Heather Waliga will carry the torch for half a mile from Cecil Street to Fayetteville Road.
The run will air live on Eyewitness News at 4 p.m.
