Blowing up a balloon with yeast

Did you know you can blow up a balloon without the use of helium or your breath? All you need is a packet of yeast, a clean, clear plastic soda bottle, a teaspoon of sugar and some warm water to get started.

How does this experiment work?

As the yeast eats the sugar, it releases a gas called carbon dioxide. The gas fills the bottle and then inflates the balloon as more gas is created.
