Autopsy: Wife in Garner murders shot 7 times

RALEIGH

On January 5, authorities found Jose Samuel Flores Mendoza and Maria Saravia Mendoza, both 34, in their house in the 700 block of Colonial Drive.

The Mendozas' 3-year-old child was also in the home at the time of the killings, but was not hurt. The couple's older child was not at the house.

Maria Mendoza's autopsy showed that she was shot seven times in the torso area. An autopsy for her husband has not been made available at this time.

A Wake County search warrant revealed that a reputed gang member lived at the house for a time before the Mendozas moved in and detectives suspected he was the intended target of the attack.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the couple's deaths. An unnamed 15 year old and 16-year-old Israel Vasquez, of 165 Montiseno Drive, Raleigh, face two counts of murder, felony conspiracy, first-degree burglary, possession of stolen property, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Investigators found shell casings for a .45 caliber pistol and a semi-automatic assault rifle at the scene of the killings.

Warrants released weeks after the shootings said it's believed the same pistol was used in another shooting in early December on Meadowbrook Road.
