Decorated U.S. soldier dies in head-on collision

A decorated active duty U.S. Army soldier died Sunday in a head-on collision.

Officials said that 25-year-old Specialist Robert L. Gagnon died in the accident when he was traveling Northwest Florida, westbound on I-10.

Officials said that Ganon and the driver of the second car both died.

The soldier started his career with the United States Army on October 8, 2013.

"He was a part of our family and will not be forgotten. Our focus now is to provide the best care and support possible to Spc. Gagnon's family and loved ones. I ask that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers," said Col. Patrick T. Colloton.

During his career Specialist Gagnon received many awards and decorations including the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Parachutist Badge and Army Marksman Badge.

Dates for funeral services have not yet been announced.
